Plug in the Quest for Mug
by Eric Grimes Date Added: Tuesday 17 May, 2005
i found out about koen while surfing a gallery that exhibits an idol of mine in terms of imagemaking: dave mckean at merry karnowsky gallery. within a couple hours of discovering koen, i ordered *Plug*. the book just came yesterday and i voraciously read it last night. as my mental intake was slightly impaired last night, i reread it this morning before i went to work. i also just bought and read the illustrated screenplay for mckean's mirrormask last week. though the storyline is the very definition of trite, mckean's visuals promise to be astounding and groundbreaking. the story for *Plug*, on the other hand, reads more like poetry than a traditional story, much less as a catering to pop marketability. the pace is wonderful too; and the imagery corresponds nicely with the words. this style needs a new term to describe it. "graphic novel" is something altogether different and nothing in the art world is similar either. it is a shame there are not more experiments along these lines. even people without the astounding skill of koen could expand the repertoire of storytelling. it is a shame the edition is limited to 2000. then again, that mere stipulation insinuates it to be the fine art object i believe it to be.
